January 19, 2026
The Karnataka State government will declare eight more temple structures and wells in Lakkundi village, Gadag district, as State-protected monuments by the end of February. This is in addition to 16 sites already protected, said Minister H.K. Patil. After another report on 20 more temples and wells, a total of 44 sites will be under State care with extra grants for their upkeep. Patil announced ₹10 crore has been allocated for developing five temples and one ancient well. Work orders will begin in February following completed tenders. He said excavations might uncover buried temple remains but need residents’ consent. Residents will be compensated to transfer ownership of such sites. A sum of ₹1.65 crore is set aside to build an open-air museum. Land donations from locals are expected by Republic Day, followed by tendering. Prajwal Ritti, who handed over treasure found during excavation, will receive a reward, possible employment, and a house. Orders will be given to his family on Republic Day. The officials including Deputy Commissioner C.N. Sridhar and Commissioner of Archaeology Devaraj attended the meeting.
