Illegal motorcycle riding on tiled footpaths is causing safety problems for pedestrians in Kozhikode city. Despite protests from residents, motorcycles keep entering footpaths, especially near busy areas like Karaparamba and Mavoor Road junctions. Pedestrians often must walk on roads to avoid these vehicles. Illegal parking on footpaths is also common near Palayam, Eranhipalam, and Mavoor Road. CCTV cameras installed are rarely monitored to catch violators. “There should be at least some bollards to prevent the entry of two-wheelers into tiled footpaths. CCTV surveillance is also needed to identify and penalise violators,” said T.C. Ramakrishnan, a senior citizen’s forum member. Traffic police have taken limited action. The frequent motorcycle movement damages footpath tiles, making walking risky, especially at night where lighting is poor. Residents and traders have also raised concerns about footpaths being used for unlicensed businesses. The problem remains due to weak enforcement despite 'No Parking' signs at many places.
