The Nedous Hotel, an iconic establishment in Gulmarg, is set to be evicted after being in operation for 137 years. The eviction notice was issued on August 2, 2025, citing unauthorized occupation under the Jammu & Kashmir Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Act, 1988. The notice elaborates that the current occupants are required to vacate the premises immediately and surrender possession. The District Magistrate of Baramulla has been asked to provide the necessary support to ensure a peaceful evacuation, involving police personnel and a Magistrate. The hotel's ownership traces back to the family of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, the founder of the ruling National Conference (NC), creating a local political and social significance associated with this landmark. The Nedous Hotel occupies a substantial area of approximately 98 kanals and 11 marlas of government land. While the family had managed to secure various leases until 1985, the renewal requests were not pursued following the expiration. The Jammu & Kashmir government rejected their request for a lease renewal in February 2015. Furthermore, the J&K High Court upheld this decision, affirming that the hotel operates unlawfully. This ongoing legal and property dispute has now culminated in the official eviction process. The historical significance of the Nedous Hotel is noteworthy as it was established by Michael Adam Nedou, who recognized the beauty of Gulmarg in the 1800s, appealing to European visitors and royals. The original hotel was built in Lahore in the 1870s, with the Gulmarg establishment following in 1888. The Nedou legacy continued through family connections, as Harry Nedou, Michael's eldest son, married Mir Jaan, a woman of Rajput Gujjar descent. Their daughter married Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, creating an enduring link between the hotel and prominent political histories in the region. Today, the Nedous Group of Hotels is led by Omar K. Nedou, a descendant of the founding family, further connecting the hotel's legacy to political dynasties.
