Danish Red Caps Mock Trump’s Greenland Claims, Spark Protests Against US Threat
January 20, 2026
Red baseball caps spoofing Donald Trump’s popular Maga hats have become a bold symbol of defiance in Denmark and Greenland. These caps read “Make America Go Away” and mock Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. Their popularity has grown with several versions trending on social media and at protests, including a recent chilly rally in Copenhagen.
European governments support Denmark and Greenland, stressing the importance of protecting the Arctic region. They also warn that Trump’s threats over Greenland could harm western security.
The caps were made by Jesper Rabe Tonnesen, who owns a vintage clothing shop in Copenhagen. At first, the hats barely sold in early 2024. But after Trump’s administration intensified its claims on Greenland, demand exploded overnight. Tonnesen commented, “When a delegation from America went up to Greenland, we started to realise this probably wasn’t a joke – it’s not reality TV, it’s actually reality.” He added, “So I said, ‘OK, what can I do?’ Can I communicate in a funny way with a good message and unite the Danes to show that Danish people support the people of Greenland?”
He hurried to order “several thousand” caps as more people snapped them up. The first design featured a clever twist on words: “Nu det NUUK!” This plays on the Danish phrase “Nu det nok,” meaning “Now it’s enough,” swapping in Nuuk, the small capital of Greenland.
At the Saturday rally, protestors wore the red caps while waving Danish and Greenlandic flags. They held signs mocking US claims such as “No Means No” and “Make America Smart Again.”
Lars Hermansen, a citizen of Copenhagen wearing the cap, said, “I want to show my support to Greenland and also show that I don’t like the president of the United States.” Kristian Boye, another protester, shared, “I’m here to support the Greenlanders, who are going through a very hard time right now. They are being threatened with having their country invaded. I think it’s totally unacceptable.”
The caps keep lighting up streets and screens, turning humor into a powerful message against foreign interference in Greenland.
