Donald Trump made improving the economy a key promise for his second term as US president. One year after returning to the White House, voters across the US shared their views with the BBC about how their lives and the economy have changed.
Mary Anne Dagata, 72, a Republican from Michigan, sees food prices falling in her rural area. "At the beginning of the year, things were a lot tougher," she said. "Gas was really, really bad and then we had problems with getting food trucked in so prices shot up real crazy."
Anthony Landaeta, 33, an independent voter in Minnesota, says everything costs more. "Childcare costs are about $25,000 per year, which really surprised me," he said. He rated Trump's handling of the economy a 4 out of 10, adding, "He talks about it more than he actually does anything to help it."
Jim Sullivan, 55, a Republican in Indiana, supports Trump but feels better during his first term. "Prices for all kinds of things are super high, electricity, all kinds of things," he said. He also mentioned immigration enforcement could be affecting the economy.
Devynn De Velasco, 22, an independent from Nebraska, worries about Trump's focus on foreign policy. "My husband and I are honestly worried about an economic collapse," she said, referring to recent remarks about Greenland, Denmark, and NATO.
Denise Demontagnac, 21, a Democrat in Maryland, has struggled to find stable work since graduating last year. "People are not hiring, partially because they cannot afford to hire," she stated, challenging Trump’s claims on job growth.
Kai Christianson, 30, a Colorado financial consultant and independent voter, feels his finances have improved slightly but fears rising costs. "Tax breaks have helped push earnings higher for companies," he noted, but warned political actions threatening the Federal Reserve were "very concerning."
Voters’ opinions show a mixed picture, balancing some improvements with worries about prices and job availability. The economy remains a key issue as Trump’s presidency moves forward.
