Supreme Court Examines Bihar’s Special Revision of Electoral Rolls Amid EC Notices to Millions
January 20, 2026
The Supreme Court on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, continued its hearing over the constitutionality of Bihar's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The court is examining challenges to the Election Commission’s power to carry out this revision. On Monday, January 19, the Supreme Court sharply criticised the Election Commission for the "stress and strain" caused to ordinary people in West Bengal. There, 1.36 crore people—around 20% of the population—have received notices from the poll panel to explain "logical discrepancies" in their names and family backgrounds. The Election Commission of India has also extended the deadline for filing claims and objections in Tamil Nadu's SIR exercise to January 30, 2026. The ongoing SIR in several states has sparked legal pleas questioning the Commission's authority and raising issues about citizenship and voting rights. Krishnadas Rajagopal reports from the Supreme Court.
