Kerala Devaswom Board Appeals SC Against High Court Ruling on Guruvayur Appointments
January 20, 2026
The Kerala Devaswom Recruitment Board (KDRB) has appealed to the Supreme Court against a Kerala High Court decision that struck down rules allowing it to appoint candidates in Guruvayur Devaswom and government-aided educational institutions.
The KDRB wants a stay on the High Court order. It told the court its job is only recruitment, not managing temple religious duties.
The High Court had ruled that appointments must follow the Guruvayur Devaswom Act, 1978. This came after the Guruvayur Devaswom Employees Union Congress and others challenged parts of the KDRB Act.
The court canceled the KDRB's notification inviting applications for various posts. It also ordered the KDRB not to conduct future selection processes for these posts. However, appointments already made by the board will remain valid.
The High Court directed the Guruvayur Devaswom managing committee to start the appointment process again. A special committee will oversee this process. This committee will be led by retired Kerala High Court judge Justice P.N. Ravindran and will serve for one year.
