January 21, 2026
A six-year-old girl survived a horrific train crash in southern Spain that killed 42 people, including her parents, brother, and cousin. The accident happened when two trains collided near Adamuz in Córdoba province. The girl was found walking on the tracks with only a minor head injury. She had traveled to Madrid with her family to see the Lion King musical and visit the Bernabéu stadium. This trip was a treat to celebrate the Christian feast of the Epiphany, a special day when Spanish children receive Christmas presents. José Carlos Hernández Cansino, mayor of Punta Umbría, called the girl’s survival "a miracle." Adrián Cano, mayor of Aljaraque, said the town was "broken with grief and almost without words of comfort." The girl was cared for by a police officer overnight before meeting her grandmother in Córdoba. The crash is Spain’s worst rail disaster in over ten years. Rescue teams are still recovering bodies. Other families shared stories of loved ones injured or lost. One man, Alberto García, said his pregnant daughter is in intensive care. She is sedated and on a ventilator while doctors watch her baby’s heartbeat. Relatives reported passengers breaking windows to escape. The girl’s dog, Boro, remains missing. Spain began three days of national mourning to honor the victims. The accident occurred when a Málaga to Madrid high-speed train derailed and collided with another train traveling from Madrid to Huelva.
