Air Force One Returns Mid-Flight Over Electrical Issue, Trump Switches Planes to Continue Davos Trip
January 21, 2026
US President Donald Trump's flight to Davos hit a bump when his designated aircraft, Air Force One, returned to Joint Base Andrews shortly after takeoff. The crew reported a “minor electrical issue,” forcing the plane to turn back as a safety step. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the decision was made quickly after the crew detected the problem. A reporter on board noted that lights briefly went out in the press cabin after takeoff. The White House Rapid Response team confirmed the issue was identified mid-flight.
Leavitt said, "Out of an abundance of caution, AF1 is returning to Joint Base Andrews. The President and team will board a different aircraft and continue on to Switzerland." Hours later, Trump and his team changed planes at the Maryland base and took off again just after midnight (0500 GMT), about two and a half hours after the first attempt.
Trump is attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He is expected to meet several global leaders and discuss key issues, including his push to take control of Greenland.
Air Force One has served as the presidential aircraft for nearly 40 years, but new planes are under development by Boeing despite delays. Recently, Qatar’s ruling family gifted Trump a luxury Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet, currently being upgraded for security. Leavitt joked that the Qatari plane was “sounding much better” on Tuesday night.
Trump called the trip to Switzerland “interesting” before departure, stating, "I have no idea what’s going to happen, but you are well represented." Previous US officials have faced similar aircraft troubles, like Secretary of State Marco Rubio in February and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in October, who had to return or make emergency landings due to mechanical problems.
