The Army was deployed in Assam’s Kokrajhar district after two people were killed in violent clashes between the Bodo and Adivasi communities. The clashes also led to arson and attacks on police property. On Monday night, a vehicle carrying three Bodos hit two Adivasi persons. The Bodos were then beaten by villagers, and the vehicle was set on fire. One person died immediately, and another succumbed to injuries the next day. Three others remain hospitalized. Fighting escalated on Tuesday, with both groups blocking the National Highway near Karigaon, burning tyres, setting a government office on fire, and attacking the Karigaon police outpost. Police used baton charges and tear gas to disperse the crowds, causing injuries to several including police personnel. The Army conducted patrols with local officials on Tuesday night and plans a flag march Wednesday to boost confidence. Four Army columns remain in Kokrajhar. The overall situation is currently under control with strict security in place in Kokrajhar and neighbouring Chirang districts. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed Army deployment arrangements. The Rapid Action Force is already on site. Authorities have set up relief camps for displaced villagers at two local schools. Internet and mobile data services have been suspended as a precaution. Prohibitory orders are in effect under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
