UAE Lawmakers Demand Review of High Medicine Prices, Seek Tougher Controls and Local Drug Production
January 21, 2026
Medicine prices in the UAE are higher than expected, causing concern among lawmakers and health officials. In early 2026, the Federal National Council (FNC) called for a detailed review of how medicine prices are set. They found that retail prices in pharmacies often exceed official rates, especially during busy times. One FNC member said, "Unified price lists often exist only on paper," pointing to weak monitoring.
This price gap affects patients with chronic illnesses who need long-term medicine. Higher prices can increase out-of-pocket costs and make it hard to follow treatment plans. Health insurance claims rose to Dh16.5 billion in 2024, driven by growing healthcare expenses. Cancer drugs are a major cost concern, sparking calls for better price control and generic options.
The Emirates Drug Establishment is reexamining pricing rules. A new high-level committee will study enforcement problems, price revision, and ways to support local medicine makers. Lawmakers see this as a chance for real change in 2026.
Local manufacturing is a key part of the strategy. Producing drugs in the UAE could cut dependence on costly imports and stabilize supply. Officials also want better price transparency to boost consumer confidence.
Relying heavily on imported medicines from Europe and the US has made UAE drug prices higher than other countries like Australia. Factors causing price rises include pharmacy markups, shortages, and weak regulation.
This price issue is not unique to the UAE. Countries worldwide struggle to balance fair prices with innovation and access. The UAE’s move reflects a global challenge about drug costs.
The FNC stresses that success will depend on actual price drops for patients. Watch for new pricing rules, stronger rules enforcement, local production effects, and clearer price displays soon. This review marks a turning point toward more fair and affordable medicine in the UAE.
