Israel Postpones Demolition of Palestinian Kids’ Football Pitch in Bethlehem
January 21, 2026
Israel has postponed the demolition of a Palestinian children's football pitch at the Aida Youth Centre in Bethlehem, West Bank. The Israeli military claimed the pitch was built without permits and was too close to the security barrier, making it a security risk. The small football club, used by over 200 young players, started facing demolition notices in late 2023.
Children like 10-year-old Naya said, "If they demolish our field, they will demolish our dreams." Another young player, Mohammed, said, "I was upset. This is a field I really care for."
An international campaign, including a petition with more than half a million signatures, as well as social media campaigns and appeals by global football bodies, pressured the authorities. The Israeli military admitted the pitch was a security concern but a political decision was made to postpone demolition "for the time being."
The concrete barrier near the pitch was built by Israel in the early 2000s to prevent attacks, but Palestinians see it as a symbol of division and land annexation. While the football pitch is saved for now, the community remains alert. Mohammad Abu Srour from the Aida Youth Centre said, "We're going to continue to campaign," fearing demolition might be reconsidered once public attention fades.
