Israeli Strike Kills Three Journalists in Gaza Amid Ceasefire Tensions
January 22, 2026
Three Palestinian journalists died in an Israeli strike in central Gaza, first responders said. Hamas-run Civil Defence named them as Mohammed Salah Qeshta, Anas Ghunaim, and Abdul Raouf Shaath. They were working for an Egyptian relief group. Their car was hit in the al-Zahra area. The Israeli military said it targeted "several suspects who operated a drone affiliated with Hamas... in a manner that posed a threat". The strike is under investigation. On the same day, eight others including two children were killed by Israeli artillery and gunfire across Gaza, according to the Hamas health ministry. Medics reported deaths from Israeli tank and gunfire in various parts of Gaza. The Israeli military also reported killing a "terrorist who crossed the Yellow Line and approached" Israeli troops, without giving a location. Since the ceasefire on October 10, at least 466 Palestinians have died in Gaza, while Israel lost three soldiers. The journalists had been filming for the Egyptian Relief Committee at displaced persons camps. The organisation said their car was clearly marked and that the strike happened during a humanitarian mission, calling the deaths "martyrdom". Hamas called the attack a "dangerous escalation" of ceasefire violations. The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate condemned the strike as a war crime and accused Israel of trying to silence Palestinian voices and hide crimes in Gaza. The Committee to Protect Journalists says over 200 media workers have been killed in Gaza since the war began, the deadliest conflict for journalists on record. Foreign media cannot enter Gaza without Israeli military control. The conflict started after a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which killed about 1,200 Israelis and took 251 hostages. Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has caused over 71,550 Palestinian deaths.
