Man Declared Dead Wakes Up in Body Bag in Mississippi Miracle
January 22, 2026
In Mississippi, Walter Williams, 78, was declared dead after heart failure and taken to a funeral home. Nurses found no pulse around 9pm, and he was pronounced dead. His body was placed in a body bag and moved to the embalming room. Suddenly, staff noticed his legs moving and he was breathing. Coroner Dexter Howard said, "We got him into the embalming room, and we noticed his legs beginning to move, like kicking. He also began to do a little breathing." Williams was rushed back to the hospital. His family was shocked. Nephew Eddie Hester said, "That was at 10:30pm, and at 2:30am, my cousin called me and said ‘Not yet’ and I said ‘what do you mean not yet’. He said, ‘Daddy still here’." Williams returned home and spoke again. His daughter said, "Seemed like he had more life in him again. And then we had just stopped talking, he told us ‘what did you all stop talking for?’ Hallelujah, thank you, Jesus. It was not my daddy’s time." The coroner believes Williams’ pacemaker may have stopped and restarted, explaining the event. Williams survived two more weeks but died on March 13, 2014, after further heart issues. Eddie Hester called it "a two-week miracle." When Williams passed the second time, the family joked about having the same coroner and funeral director present again. Coroner Howard said the case was a rare learning moment and proof that "miracles can happen."
