Bengaluru Hospital Performs Dual Robot-Assisted Heart and Prostate Cancer Surgery in One Session

A hospital in Bengaluru has achieved a medical first by performing both robot-assisted minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass surgery (MIDCAB) and robotic radical prostatectomy together in one operation. The 56-year-old US-based NRI patient suffered from both serious heart artery blockage and prostate cancer, conditions that usually need separate major surgeries. The patient faced risks of heart attack and cancer progression if untreated. After careful planning, the team at Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road operated using advanced robotic technology. Cardiac surgeon Sudarshan G.T. explained that the heart surgery used the patient’s chest artery to restore blood flow through small keyhole cuts without opening the chest, keeping trauma low. The bypass took one-and-a-half hours. Meanwhile, urologist Mohan Keshavamurthy said the 3.5-hour prostate surgery removed the prostate and nearby glands affected by cancer with high precision, placing temporary stents to protect urine flow. The combined approach reduced exposure to anesthesia, hospital stays, and recovery times. "Performing it in a single sitting along with cardiac surgery is highly complex, but it spares the patient the physical and emotional burden of two separate major operations," said Dr. Keshavamurthy. The patient left the hospital within five days, marking a huge win for multi-disciplinary robotic surgery.
