A fresh probe will be conducted into the unnatural death of a 47-year-old tribal man, Viswanathan, whose body was found hanging near Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital in February 2023. The order came recently from the Kozhikode Principal Sessions Court, following an appeal by the victim’s sibling. The court directed that the re-investigation report be submitted within two months. The victim’s family had expressed strong dissatisfaction with the earlier investigation, which was handled by local police and the Crime Branch. They accused the police of slow progress, leading to the disappearance of vital evidence. The family also complained that there was no proper inquiry into the suspected intimidation of Viswanathan, which may have contributed to his unnatural death. On February 9, 2023, unidentified men reportedly humiliated Viswanathan publicly, accusing him of stealing a mobile phone and cash from a caregiver near the hospital. The man fled the scene, shaken by the experience. His body was found hanging from a tree two days later, on February 11. The special investigation team (SIT) faced criticism for failing to locate the person who reported losing the phone and cash. Despite questioning about 150 people, the SIT found no clue about the complainant. Security guards at the scene also could not provide useful information. This re-investigation aims to address these gaps and ensure justice for Viswanathan.
