Delhi HC Orders IndiGo to File Affidavit on Refunds and Compensation for Flight Cancellations
January 22, 2026
The Delhi High Court on Thursday asked IndiGo to file an affidavit about refunds and compensation for passengers affected by mass flight cancellations in December 2025. The court heard a PIL seeking directions to the government to help passengers stranded due to IndiGo's cancelled flights. The airline's lawyer told the court that refunds were processed and compensation given as per aviation rules. For the most affected flights, passengers are offered ₹10,000 vouchers. A special website is set up for claims. The Bench of Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia ordered, "Let an affidavit be filed by respondent no. 3 to this effect in two weeks." The petition said IndiGo's ₹10,000 vouchers expire in 12 months. The court asked what happens if passengers cannot use them on time. IndiGo’s counsel said he would check and file an affidavit. Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, representing the Civil Aviation Ministry and DGCA, said steps were taken after the crisis. These included dismissing a senior vice president, imposing a ₹22 crore penalty on IndiGo, demanding a ₹50 crore bank guarantee for compliance, and warning top airline officials like the CEO and COO. A sealed inquiry report was submitted to the court. Between December 3 and 5, 2025, as per DGCA, IndiGo cancelled 2,507 flights and delayed 1,852, affecting over three lakh passengers nationwide. The court will hear the matter again on February 25.
