Marineland Seeks Government Approval to Sell Beluga Whales to US After China Ban
January 23, 2026
Marineland, the Canadian amusement park and aquarium, has applied to the Canadian government to export its beluga whales to the United States. This move comes after the park's proposal to send its whales to China was rejected. Marineland has been under scrutiny for years, with 20 animals, including 19 belugas, dying since 2019. The park is closed to visitors and plans to sell its land. It shocked the public last year by saying it might euthanize its 30 whales if it could not find buyers. On Wednesday, Marineland representatives presented new export permit applications to Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson. A spokesperson said the minister will review them quickly. Former trainer Phil Demers told AFP that Marineland aims to sell the belugas to several US parks. The Canadian Press also reported plans to sell the animals to US facilities. Marineland has not commented on reports that it has prepared a euthanasia plan to kill the whales if the US export is denied. Minister Thompson previously blocked the 2025 request to export whales to China's Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, citing concerns over animal exploitation. Ontario's animal welfare officials have been investigating Marineland for five years, but the park claims all beluga deaths were from natural causes.
