6-Year-Old Walks 2 Miles to Get Help After Father Dies in New York Ice Pond Accident
January 23, 2026
On January 18, a tragic accident struck Chaumont Pond in upstate New York. Bryan P LaPlante, 33, his 6-year-old son, and family friend Michael J Booth, 48, were ice fishing. Their snowmobile broke through the ice, plunging them into freezing water. Bryan managed to lift his son out and told him to walk to his grandmother’s house and call 911, saying, “follow the moon” to find the way. The boy walked nearly two miles through the freezing cold and reached his grandfather, Patrick R LaPlante, 51. Patrick tried to rescue Bryan and Booth but fell through the ice himself. He pulled himself out but lost sight of them. Rescue teams found Bryan and Booth unresponsive later. Both men were declared dead at Gouverneur Hospital. The boy and his grandfather were taken to Clifton-Fine Hospital for hypothermia treatment and were later released. Bryan’s sister called her brother a hero, saying he “died saving his son.” Authorities continue investigating the accident.
