Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s Daughter Urges Return of His Remains from Tokyo
January 23, 2026
Anita Bose Pfaff, daughter of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, has called on all Indians to support the return of her father’s remains from Tokyo, Japan. Her statement came on the eve of Netaji’s 129th birth anniversary, observed as Parakram Diwas (Day of Valour). She said Netaji "would have been deeply distressed that his remains are still kept outside his motherland more than 80 years after his death and 78 years after India became free." Anita Bose Pfaff invited Indians to "support his posthumous return from exile; to support the transfer of his mortal remains to India for a final and fitting disposal." She detailed that after Japan’s surrender in August 1945, Netaji left Singapore for Tokyo but died in an air crash in Taipei on August 18, 1945. Despite surviving the crash initially with severe burns, he died later that day. His ashes were cremated in Taipei and later moved to Tokyo, where they remain under the care of the chief priest of the Renkoji Temple. While some believe Netaji survived the crash and lived on incognito, Anita Bose Pfaff accepts that he died in 1945. This appeal is not new; she made a similar request to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2025.
