Pakistan Mall Fire Death Toll Rises to 67, 77 Missing in Karachi's Gul Plaza
January 23, 2026
Pakistan's Gul Plaza shopping centre in Karachi caught fire on Saturday evening. The blaze claimed 67 lives, police confirmed. Around 77 people remain missing, their families reported. The fire burned for more than 24 hours before being controlled. The mall spans 6,500 sq meters and housed about 1,200 shops across several floors. Deputy police commissioner told the BBC that 67 skulls had been recovered, and 15 victims identified so far. Witnesses blamed the disaster on locked fire exits and overcrowded shops. Shop owner Rehan Faisal said it took "five to seven minutes" for the fire to "burn before our eyes." Many gates were locked as the mall was nearing closing time. Senior police official Syed Asad Raza told Reuters that 13 of the 16 exits were locked during the fire. Rescue teams continue searching the wreckage for victims amid tough conditions.
