January 23, 2026
On January 23, 2026, the Karnataka High Court allowed bike taxis to operate legally in the state. The court ordered authorities to register bikes as transport vehicles and issue contract carriage permits under the Motor Vehicles Act. Major players Uber and Rapido praised the move. An Uber spokesperson said, "We welcome the High Court’s decision to recognize bike taxis as a legal mode of passenger transport in Karnataka. Bike taxis serve as a vital mobility lifeline for Indian cities, offering people an affordable and convenient way to navigate traffic. The decision will also bring relief to lakhs of drivers who depend on it for their livelihood." Rapido called the order a milestone for urban mobility and said, "It is a win for the people of Karnataka, who now have access to a safe, affordable and efficient commuting option that complements the State’s mobility needs while creating meaningful livelihood opportunities for thousands of youth." Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy stated he will review the judgment before commenting or acting. Bike taxi riders expressed relief. Shankar B. from Bengaluru said, "For many of us, bike taxis are our primary source of income. With this clarity from the court, we finally feel some stability and hope that the government will now frame clear rules." Regular users also welcomed the decision. Pritham K., a software professional, said, "Bike taxis save me at least 30 minutes every day during peak traffic. They are affordable and reliable. I am glad the service can continue legally." Commuter Manoj Kumar added, "Registering bike taxis as transport vehicles is a welcome move. Issuing licences with yellow badges should also be considered. I hope the government takes control, and ensures that last-mile connectivity is improved and not restricted, especially since Bengaluru has been rated among the most congested cities." This court order aims to ease congestion and support thousands who rely on bike taxis for work and travel in Karnataka.
