Russia Attacks Ukraine Amid Ongoing Peace Talks with US in Abu Dhabi
January 24, 2026
Russia launched drone and missile attacks on Ukraine overnight, killing one person and injuring 23 others. This attack came as Russia, Ukraine, and the US held trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi to try to end the war. Kyiv's mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a "massive enemy attack" that killed one and wounded four people. Kharkiv's mayor Ihor Terekhov said 19 people were hurt in a sustained assault on the city. The attacks damaged Kyiv's critical infrastructure, leaving 6,000 buildings without heating amid freezing temperatures. President Volodymyr Zelensky said, "The main target of the Russians was the energy infrastructure." The talks, the first since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, showed some progress but the key issue of territory remains unresolved. Russia controls about 20% of Ukraine’s land and demands the return of large areas, which Ukraine has refused. A maternity hospital and a hostel for displaced people were also damaged in Kharkiv's strikes.
