On Saturday morning, January 24, 2026, a speeding luxury car crashed into a guardrail at Kolkata's Red Road area during Republic Day parade rehearsals. The police said the car was moving fast and, when officers asked it to stop, the driver tried to escape and hit the rail. No one was hurt in the crash. However, it reminded officials of a tragic 2016 accident when a similar incident killed Air Force corporal Abhimanyu Gaud. Police have taken the vehicle and detained the driver. A Maidan police officer said, "We are interrogating the driver to ascertain why he entered a restricted zone and attempted to flee when signalled to stop." The officer added, "The seized car did not have a valid insurance and pollution under control (PUC) certificate." The investigation is ongoing as security concerns rise during the parade preparations.
