Councillors to Hunger Strike Over Vyttila Junction Traffic Chaos on January 28
January 26, 2026
Newly elected councillors from four wards around Vyttila Junction will stage a hunger strike there on January 28. The junction is the busiest in Kerala and faces severe traffic congestion. Neither the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) nor the Public Works Department (PWD) National Highways wing has taken steps to fix the problem. Mayor V.K. Minimol is expected to visit the protest site. Following the strike, the Vyttila United Forum—a group of local bodies and associations—will hold a video presentation in early February. The presentation aims to highlight ways to decongest the junction and make it signal-free.
Councillor Chandran V.P., representing Vyttila division in Kochi Municipal Corporation, said the six-lane flyover built five years ago failed to ease traffic. "Unscientific junction redevelopment has worsened the situation for both motorists and pedestrians," he said. He added that multiple government studies have been ignored despite promises to act. Chandran urged the State government to approve a ₹1 crore plan by the PWD NH wing. This project includes cutting parts of the large medians under the flyover to widen the road. He also called for relocating a traffic police watchtower that blocks traffic towards Palarivattom. These actions could reduce waiting time at signals from three directions. He suggested installing countdown timers on all traffic lights to save fuel.
Vyttila United Forum chairman Thampy V.R. said the video presentation aims to draw attention to the chaos at the improperly designed junction, where over half a dozen main roads meet. Their study found 1.5 lakh vehicles pass through daily. About 80% of traffic moves east-west, causing jams from Champakkara to Elamkulam. According to Thampy, transforming the junction into a signal-free zone using smart U-turns would solve the problem. The traffic mess has also hurt local shops, some of which have shut down.
