At least 11 people died and 12 others were hurt when gunmen attacked a soccer field in Salamanca, Guanajuato, Mexico, on Sunday. "The deaths of 11 people have been confirmed, 10 of whom died at the scene and one more while receiving medical attention at a hospital," said a statement from the mayor’s office, cited by AFP. The 12 injured are being treated in hospitals. Security forces began a search operation to find the attackers after the shooting. Earlier, four bags with human remains were found in Salamanca late Saturday night. Guanajuato is a key industrial and tourist area but remains Mexico’s deadliest state due to ongoing fights between criminal groups. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum recently noted that the country’s homicide rate reached its lowest level in a decade in 2025, crediting her government’s national security strategy. However, violence continues to plague states like Guanajuato.
