Boeing Eyes More Dreamliner Orders as Indian Aviation Market Grows
January 26, 2026
US aircraft maker Boeing expects to get more orders for its Dreamliner planes in India, a top company official said. Boeing India and South Asia President Salil Gupte highlighted India’s growing aviation market and the goal to industrialize Indian aerospace. "B787 has an extremely bright future in India... we look forward to potentially more orders for the 787 in India coming," Gupte told PTI.
Air India operates 33 Dreamliners, including 26 B787-8s and six B787-9s from Vistara. The airline’s first custom-made Dreamliner after privatization is set to begin commercial flights from February 1. IndiGo also leases some Dreamliners from Norse Atlantic Airways.
Last year, an Air India Dreamliner crash on flight AI171 tragically killed 260 people. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is still investigating. Gupte said 2025 was a tough year for Boeing but stressed the company’s focus on victims’ families. He added, "...we expect the Indian AAIB will issue its report. But beyond that, there's not much that any of the OEMs can comment on."
Despite recent challenges like regulatory issues and tariffs, Gupte remains confident about Boeing’s future in India. "Whether it is a tariff or a financial crisis or something else, in the long term, it does not affect the growth of the business," he said. Boeing has over 265 aircraft in India and sources materials worth over $1.25 billion annually from more than 325 Indian suppliers.
Regarding competition from Airbus, Gupte said, "Competition is natural in the industry," and that the B787 will fit many flight routes as the aviation sector grows. The company's presence includes fleets at Air India, Air India Express, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet.
Boeing is optimistic about overcoming short-term problems and growing with India's expanding aviation landscape.
