Homeless Families Protest on Republic Day Over Broken Housing Promises in Yelahanka
January 26, 2026
Families made homeless by the demolition of their homes at Fakeer Colony in Kogilu Layout, Yelahanka, protested on Republic Day. The demolition happened on December 20, and these families were promised new houses by January 2 by Minority Welfare and Housing Minister B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan. But no action was taken. The protest was called a 'Poor People’s Republic Day' and organized by trade unions, women’s groups, student organizations, and progressive collectives. Members of Slum Mahila Sanghatane urged residents to stay united and stressed education for children. Leaders from Dudiya Janara Vedike spoke about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s vision of equality and said the Constitution’s promises have still not reached marginalized communities, even after 77 years. They accused those in power of ignoring constitutional values. SFI leader Basavaraju criticized rising discrimination and said the government’s promise of rule "of the people, by the people, for the people" is fading. CITU leader Hanumantha Rao Havaldar blamed the government’s land policies for favoring big companies while denying small housing plots to long-time residents.
