Motorcycle Set Ablaze Amid CPI(M) Tensions in Kannur After Kunhikrishnan's Expulsion
January 27, 2026
Tensions soared in Payyannur, Kannur, Kerala, after a motorcycle was set on fire late Monday night. The bike belonged to Prasannan, a supporter of former CPI(M) leader V. Kunhikrishnan. Prasannan's motorcycle was taken from his home courtyard and torched in a nearby paddy field. This happened a day after Kunhikrishnan was expelled from CPI(M) for alleged irregularities in the martyrs’ fund. Prasannan had joined a protest supporting Kunhikrishnan following the expulsion. Meanwhile, CPI(M) will hold a "political explanation" meeting in Payyannur on Tuesday at 7 pm. Branch, local, and area committees under Payyannur area committee will attend. Leaders from state and district levels are also expected to speak. After Kunhikrishnan's ouster, CPI(M) workers protested outside his house, bursting firecrackers. Kunhikrishnan was not home then. Later, some people showed support for him at his residence, praising his stand against the party.
