Kerala Assembly Resumes Amid UDF Protests Over Sabarimala Gold Theft
January 27, 2026
The Kerala Legislative Assembly met again on January 27, 2026, after uproar over the alleged Sabarimala gold theft. The Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) staged a calmer protest than before. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan told Speaker A.N. Shamseer that the UDF would keep demanding Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan's resignation. He also accused the special investigation team (SIT) of facing pressure from the Chief Minister’s Office. Two UDF MLAs, C.R. Mahesh and Najeeb Kanthapuram, began a satyagraha outside the Assembly. Mr. Satheesan said the Opposition would protest but also cooperate with Assembly work. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan responded by saying the protest was not against the government. He said the SIT is under Kerala High Court supervision and the court guides the investigation. "The protest, though being held at the gates of the Legislative Assembly, is in effect directed against the High Court," the Chief Minister said.
