January 28, 2026
The long march for land rights in Maharashtra, which began in Nashik on January 25, will likely be called off on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. This follows Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis giving assurance to the protestors' delegation on Tuesday, January 27. Representatives from CPI(M) and the All India Kisan Sabha met five Maharashtra ministers and senior officials at the State Secretariat. Later, they met CM Fadnavis at his official residence. The protestors demanded action on the Forest Rights Act, better use of water resources for local communities and drought-hit areas, and PESA recruitment for jobs in education, agriculture, and more. Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Girish Mahajan and Nashik district Collector will update protestors on January 28 about the government’s steps. Ashok Dhawale, president of the All India Kisan Sabha, said, "The talks were successful. We have been given an assurance that the government will review all the land claims under the Forest Rights Act. There will be a district-wise review of the claims in the next three months." The government plans to benefit tribal farmers with all schemes related to crops on forest land. It is also preparing a law to transfer temple land to traditional tillers and shared a draft with the delegation. At the meeting, ministers including Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan, Tribal Development Minister Ashok Uike, School Education Minister Dada Bhuse, and Forest Minister Ganesh Naik took part. The discussions lasted over two hours. CM Fadnavis said, "It is our effort to find a respectable solution to their issues. Wherever there are tribals, farmers, the government will always be positive." A committee led by Sub-Divisional Officers will review forest rights claims in all districts within three months to fix discrepancies caused by past errors. The government will conduct E-Crop surveys for better farmer benefits and build check dams in Nashik to store water for tribals and farmers. The court-ordered PESA recruitment will be carried out immediately in tribal areas, the government assured. Protestors are currently staying at Bhatsa junction in Thane and await further updates on January 28.
