Indian H-1B Visa Holder Sent Back From Abu Dhabi Preclearance Over Visa Stamping Issue
January 28, 2026
An Indian H-1B visa holder shared a stressful experience of being sent back to India from Abu Dhabi preclearance despite holding a valid visa. The person left Hyderabad after thorough document checks with no issues. But at Abu Dhabi, officials stopped the individual and took the passport and I-797 approval notice. They asked detailed questions about the job, including if the work was remote or onsite, and requested recent pay stubs.
The person explained that the job was remote/hybrid, was actively working, and had changed employer six months ago. The updated I-797 for the current employer was shown. However, the visa stamp in the passport still showed the previous employer, valid until March 26, 2026. The incident happened on January 11.
Immigration officials said the visa was "close to expiry" and insisted that the traveler needed new visa stamping reflecting the current employer before traveling to the US. The person replied that visa appointments were unavailable but planned to book soon.
The officials did not cancel the visa or stamp the passport but firmly said travel was not allowed at that time. They arranged for the person to return home on the next flight. The person had to collect the luggage and leave.
Sharing the experience, the traveler described the situation as "mentally very stressful" and surprising, given all documents were valid and cleared Hyderabad checks. The officials gave little scope to explain beyond stating the need for updated stamping.
