A private non-AC sleeper bus was going from Hosanagara in Shivamogga district to Bengaluru on the night of January 27, 2026. Near Sudur in Hosanagara taluk, the bus caught fire. There were 36 passengers on board. Around 10:30 p.m., smoke was seen in the driver’s cabin, and the driver stopped the bus after hitting a tree. The passengers were awake and quickly opened the windows and emergency exit to jump off the bus. Three people, including the driver and conductor, suffered burn injuries. Others had minor bruises while escaping. Shivamogga’s Superintendent of Police, B. Nikhil, told The Hindu, “Because it was a non-AC bus, the passengers could get down from the bus quickly. Three people suffered burn injuries, and a few others sustained bruises while getting off the vehicle in a panic.” The injured are receiving treatment. The bus, owned by Sri Annapurneshwari Travels, was completely gutted by fire. Police and Fire and Emergency Services reached the site quickly to control the situation.
