Kerala's Marine Exports Drop 9.5% in 2024-25 Amid Trade Barriers
January 28, 2026
Kerala’s marine product exports fell again in 2024-25, dropping from 1.96 lakh metric tonnes (MT) in 2023-24 to 1.79 lakh MT, according to the Economic Review presented on January 28, 2026. The export value dipped from ₹7,231.8 crore to ₹6,941.36 crore, a 9.5% volume fall and 4.18% value decline.
The Economic Review linked this drop to tariff and non-tariff barriers, including antibiotic rejections and biosecurity issues. The US ban on wild-caught shrimps from India, due to non-use of the Turtle Excluder Device, also hurt exports.
India’s overall marine export volume fell from 17.81 lakh MT to 16.98 lakh MT but saw an increase in export value from ₹60,523.89 crore to ₹62,408.45 crore.
Kerala remains India’s third largest seafood exporter by quantity and second by value. However, its share shrank from 13.72% in 2020-21 to 10.58% in volume, and from 12.86% to 11.12% in value in 2024-25.
Notably, Kerala's exports to the US dropped slightly from 18,083 MT to 17,558 MT. China, the largest market in 2023-24 at 43,964 MT, was overtaken by the European Union with 49,956 MT in 2024-25. Exports to China also dropped to 29,353 MT.
Frozen shrimp and frozen fish lead Kerala’s exports, making up 34.51% and 21.66%, respectively. In 2024-25, Kerala exported 61,992 MT of frozen shrimp and 38,915 MT of frozen fish. Other key exports include frozen cuttlefish (12.19%), frozen squid (14.33%), and dried items (9.08%).
Since 2015-16, Kerala’s marine exports had been rising before the dip starting in 2023-24. These developments highlight ongoing challenges in the seafood export market due to global trade regulations and market shifts.
