Asia Battles Record-Breaking Rains as Europe Prepares for Fiery Heatwave

August 9, 2025

Asia is swimming in rain this week, and the stormy weather is not packing its bags anytime soon! Hong Kong has sounded the alarm loud and clear, issuing four black rainstorm warnings – a record smash in just seven days. The biggest deluge hit on August 5, dumping over 350mm in one day – the heaviest August downpour Hong Kong has seen since 1884! Roads flooded and flights scrambled, chaos was the name of the game. Far away in northern India, Uttarakhand was caught in a watery trap. Flash floods and landslides struck hard after 200mm or more rain fell in just a day. Sadly, one person has died, and over 50 remain missing. Rescue teams are battling more heavy rains, making it tough to reach the stranded. Uttarakhand's mountainous terrain and steep valleys turn rainstorms into deadly floods and landslides during monsoon times. Japan, after a roasting heatwave, faced a watery surprise in Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture. A record 148mm fell in just three hours, a downpour fueled by a low-pressure system bringing warm, moist air from the Sea of Japan. This moist air met a cold front, revving up the rainfall even more, with the sea water temperatures sitting 3-5°C above normal. Bullet trains halted, and roads closed under the heavy wet umbrella! And this was outside Japan's usual rainy season, which ends mid-July. More rain and thunderstorms are on the way, heading in from the southwest and even hitting South Korea. While Asia battles water skies, Southwest Europe is turning up the heat. Spain and France are gearing up for a serious heatwave starting this week, with temps soaring past 40°C. Northern Spain gets the first fiery blast, while southern France, including cities like Bordeaux and Toulouse, will sizzle next week. Temperatures are shooting over 12°C above the normal for this season! So, Europe is set for fire, and Asia is stuck in water – Mother Nature is really turning up the drama!
