India's Auto Exports Hit 53 Lakh Vehicles in FY25, Show Strong Growth
January 29, 2026
India's automobile exports have surged, reflecting rising acceptance of India-made vehicles worldwide, states the Economic Survey 2025-26. Over 53 lakh vehicles across passenger, commercial, two-wheeler, and three-wheeler categories were exported in FY25. The sector also posted double-digit export growth in the first half of 2025-26. The Survey highlighted, "A robust demand-side recovery has driven both production growth and sales in the post-pandemic period." Vehicle production grew nearly 33% from FY15 to FY25. Backed by a wide manufacturing and auto component network, the automobile industry employs more than 30 million people directly and indirectly and contributes about 15% to India's GST collections. India is "the world’s largest market for two-wheelers and three-wheelers and the third-largest market globally for passenger and commercial vehicles," the Survey added. Government programs have spurred growth in electric vehicle (EV) sales. These include the PLI Scheme for Automobile & Auto Components Industry, the PLI scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell Battery Storage, and the PM E-DRIVE and PM e-Bus Sewa-Payment Security Mechanism schemes. The Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SMEC), launched in March 2024, is also driving sector expansion. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented this report in the Lok Sabha on January 29, 2026, providing an annual update on India's economic progress.
