Delhi NCR Drenched on Raksha Bandhan: Heavy Rain, Waterlogging and IMD Alert Shake the City

August 9, 2025

The national capital wore a wet, wild look early Saturday morning as heavy rain poured down late Friday night, drenching many parts of Delhi-NCR. The downpour started around 11 pm on Friday and turned several localities into waterlogged zones. Areas like Panchkuian Marg, Mathura Road, Shastri Bhawan, RK Puram, Moti Bagh, Kidwai Nagar, and many others battled floods as the skies continued their downpour on the day of Raksha Bandhan. Thanks to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), residents were forewarned with a red alert predicting heavy rains, lightning, and thunderstorms across north, west, south, southeast, and central Delhi areas early Saturday. However, this intense warning was later softened to a yellow alert, urging people to stay cautious but hopeful. The rainfall figures tell a stormy story. Delhi’s main weather post at Safdarjung recorded a hefty 78.7 mm in just 24 hours ending 8:30 am Saturday. Pragati Maidan, another hotspot, took the lead with 100 mm. Lodhi Road saw 80 mm, Pusa 69 mm, while Palam received a milder 31.8 mm. Unlike a typical summer day, the temperature took a refreshing dip to 23.8 degrees Celsius in the morning, which is 3.2 degrees cooler than usual for early August. Meanwhile, the mercury is expected to rise only to 32 degrees Celsius, keeping the day relatively mild. So, as Delhi celebrates the bond of siblings this Raksha Bandhan, it also dances in the rhythm of relentless rains. The weather adds a splash of drama and freshness, but it’s wise for everyone to keep an umbrella handy and tread carefully through the soggy streets. After all, who doesn’t love a little rain drama on a festive day?
