Farmers Protest Navy Weapons Depot Plan, Oppose Land Acquisition in Eluru
January 29, 2026
Farmers, farm workers, women, and local residents held a big protest on January 29 in Koyyalagudem, Eluru district. They opposed the government's plan to build a Navy weapons depot. The protesters said they will not give up their fertile land. Under the Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham, farmers from villages including Bodigudem, Mangapathi Devipeta, and Regulagunta marched to Koyyalagudem. They surrounded the mandal tahsildar’s office and shouted slogans against forced land acquisition. The protest included a maha dharna, a rally, and a short road blockade on Tadepalligudem road. K. Srinivas, State Assistant Secretary of A.P. Rythu Sangham, said the government is deciding without asking villagers through gram sabhas. He said farmers were upset about remarks from the Eluru MP that land would be taken even by arrests. Srinivas warned that trying to take about 1,200 acres would cause a strong mass movement. Farmers said they already lost land to projects like Polavaram and highways. They stressed the land marked for the depot is fertile and grows commercial and horticultural crops, giving year-round work for farm laborers. They demand the government stop this plan immediately.
