easyJet Warns of Fare Rises and Delays Over EU Free Cabin Bag Proposal
January 29, 2026
easyJet has slammed a new European Parliament proposal that would allow all passengers to carry a free additional cabin bag. The airline’s chief executive, Kenton Jarvis, called the move a “lunatic idea” that could cause flight delays and fare increases. The plan would let passengers keep one personal item plus a hand luggage piece weighing up to 7kg and measuring up to 100cm combined. This is bigger than current limits on some airlines like Ryanair.
The proposal, still needing approval from the European Council, would affect most flights in and out of the EU on EU-based airlines, including many UK short-haul flights. Jarvis warned that this rule would create space problems in planes. “We would go back to the days of having to offload cabin bags and put them in the hold,” he said.
Bag charges contribute much to easyJet’s £2.5bn annual earnings from extras. Passing this cost onto passengers could mean higher prices for all, Jarvis said. He called the legislation “crazy European legislation” and “terrible for the consumer”.
easyJet was also criticized by the UK Advertising Standards Authority for claiming luggage fees as low as £5.99 without proof. Jarvis called the warning “irritating” but confirmed changes were made on their website.
On technology, easyJet is in talks with Starlink to bring wifi onboard but said the cost is not right now. Jarvis mentioned a recent feud between Ryanair’s CEO and Elon Musk, owner of Starlink, but said opinions on CEOs won’t affect buying decisions. “It will be difficult to deliberately buy an inferior product for your customers because you have opinions on the CEO,” he said.
Financially, easyJet reported a 50% rise in pre-tax losses to £93 million last quarter despite a 7% rise in travelers. Losses partly stem from investments in new bases in Milan and Rome where unprofitable routes are required by local rules. Jarvis announced record bookings for the year ahead, with passengers flying to new spots like Morocco, Tunisia, Cape Verde, and Georgia.
