Ukraine Gets 1,000 Soldier Bodies in Latest Swap with Russia
January 29, 2026
Ukraine said it has received 1,000 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers from Russia in the latest soldier swap. Russia received 38 bodies of its soldiers in return, said Vladimir Medinsky, Moscow's chief negotiator. Medinsky shared a photo on Telegram showing people in biohazard suits standing beside white refrigerated trucks used to transport the bodies. Over the nearly four-year war, thousands of soldiers' bodies have been exchanged between Kyiv and Moscow. This latest swap follows a 2025 Istanbul agreement. The deal calls for returning 12,000 soldiers’ bodies and exchanging all sick and heavily wounded prisoners of war and those under 25 years old. The previous swap happened in November 2025, when Russia sent back 1,000 bodies and received 30. No prisoners of war swaps have happened since October 2025 due to both sides blaming each other for delays. As the February 2026 mark of Russia’s full-scale invasion nears, peace talks continue. Recently, Russian, Ukrainian, and US negotiators met in the United Arab Emirates for the first three-way talks since the war began. They described the talks as constructive, but key issues remain, such as Russia’s demand for Ukraine to give up parts of the Donetsk region. Meanwhile, drone attacks keep happening. On Tuesday, a Russian drone hit a passenger train in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, killing at least five people. Russia has also increased strikes on infrastructure, causing many Ukrainians to face freezing temperatures without power or heat.
