Sammakka Placed on Sacred Platform at Medaram During Grand Jatara
January 30, 2026
On January 29, at 9:45 p.m., the goddess Sammakka arrived at Medaram's tribal shrine in a vermillion casket. A team of Koya priests escorted her from Chilakalagutta hillock to her sacred platform, called the Gadde. This marked a major event during the four-day Sammakka–Saralamma Maha Jatara that started on January 28. The place was packed with pilgrims from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and beyond. Devotees performed traditional rituals like offering jaggery and animal sacrifices to seek family welfare. The air buzzed with festive tribal dances and the sound of horns and trumpets along the approach roads. Earlier in the evening, thousands gathered as priests led by Kokkera Krishnaiah descended from the hillock after secret rituals. The procession moved toward the shrine under strong security. Mulugu SP Sudhir R. Kekan fired rounds from an AK-47 into the air, a tradition since 1996, to honor the deity. The priests, covering their faces with sacred red cloth, were Kokkera Krishnaiah, Mallyala Satyam, Siddaboina Muninder, Siddaboina Bokkanna, Kommu Swami, and Kommu Janardhan. Ministers Danasari Anasuya Seethakka and Adluri Laxman Kumar, District Collector T.S. Divakara, and other officials attended the event. Along the 2.5-km route, many climbed trees to see the procession better. It is estimated that over one crore devotees will have darshan of Sammakka, Pagididdaraju, Saralamma, and Govindaraju, all present on the Gadde. The arrival sparked energetic celebrations with rangoli, lamps, animal sacrifices, and tribal songs, drumbeats, dances, and chants welcoming the goddess.
