India-China Crack Open Peace Door: Disengagement Agreement on LAC Patrols in Depsang and Demchok

August 9, 2025

Big news from the mountains! India and China reached a special deal on October 21, 2024, about how they patrol the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the tricky regions of Depsang and Demchok. This agreement means both armies took steps to pull back from tense spots, calming things down along the border. The government told Lok Sabha about this happy progress on Friday. Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs, shared that the previous agreements about other parts of eastern Ladakh are still strong and working. Since the firecracker moments in the past, India and China have kept talking like good neighbours. Meetings happened between top leaders like the Prime Minister, Defence Minister, and External Affairs Minister. They use many official channels, including meetings of military commanders and special talks, to solve those tough border puzzles. "India and China reached an agreement on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control in India-China border areas in Depsang and Demchok on 21 October 2024, leading to disengagement. The agreement has since been effected and implemented as per modalities and timelines agreed," said Singh clearly in his written reply. This means the deal is not just words but happening on the ground. The talks go beyond border patrols. Both countries also chat about people-friendly issues like the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimage, new direct flights, and cooperation on cross-border rivers. Last year also marked 75 years of diplomatic ties, celebrated with warmth despite challenges. However, the journey to calm is ongoing. There are talks about lifting trade barriers and improving economic cooperation. Singh mentioned these were discussed by the External Affairs Minister and Foreign Secretary with their Chinese friends at different meetings. In short, while the border is not fully peaceful yet, India and China are unlocking the door to better understanding bit by bit. The recent patrol agreement in Depsang and Demchok is a spicy step toward friendship, peace, and teamwork on their rugged frontiers.
