Indian Student Visa Holder in Australia Jailed for $200,000 Property Scam
January 30, 2026
A 28-year-old Indian man named Pardeep has been jailed in Australia for two years for a well-planned fraud. He was living in Australia on a student visa and working as an Uber driver. Pardeep pretended to be a Sydney law firm. He created a fake company and used a nearly identical email to trick a homebuyer into paying $209,874 for a house purchase and stamp duty fees.
The victim sent the money after receiving convincing emails. The scam was discovered when the victim contacted the real law firm. The police traced the fraud to Pardeep. He denied any wrongdoing, claiming he owned a transport company but had no customers.
Pardeep spent most of the stolen money on gold, as shown by surveillance footage. Only $900 was recovered. His lawyer claimed he acted under someone else's instructions, but no evidence supported this. The judge said, "He knew exactly what he was doing," and sentenced him to two years in jail with a 14-month non-parole period.
After his release, Pardeep, who was living in Australia with his partner, is likely to be deported.
