Helicopter Hits Powerlines, Crashes Into Missouri River; Four Escape Safely

A helicopter carrying four people crashed into powerlines and plunged into the Meramec River at Meramec State Park in Sullivan, Missouri, around 1 p.m. on Thursday. All four occupants escaped the river safely with only minor injuries, according to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR). They are currently under medical care at Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan.
The Missouri DNR reported that state park team members and the pilot were conducting an ecological survey of the park when their helicopter struck a powerline. Trained swimmers and EMS teams quickly responded to help. The pilot and three passengers "self-rescued" from the water.
No deaths were reported. Officials from the Missouri DNR, Sullivan Fire Protection District, and Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) responded to the scene. MSHP deployed another helicopter to assist.
Kurt Schaefer, director of the Missouri DNR, said, "While we continue to investigate, we want to thank the first responders for their quick actions, and we are very thankful that everyone appears to be ok."
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the crash of a Robinson R44 helicopter in Sullivan at about 1 p.m. on January 29. The FAA said it will investigate and urged anyone with information to contact local authorities. A preliminary accident report is expected soon.
