Saudi Supreme Court Calls for Ramadan 2026 Crescent Moon Sighting on Feb 17
January 30, 2026
As Ramadan 2026 approaches, Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court has issued its yearly appeal to Muslims to observe and report the crescent moon. The court urges all believers to look for the moon on the evening of February 17, 2026, which is the 28th of Sha'ban according to the Islamic calendar. People can report their sightings with or without optical aids by visiting the nearest court or verification center for official recording.
In a press release, the court said, "The court requests that anyone who sights the crescent moon with the naked eye or with binoculars register their testimony with the nearest court or contact the center to be directed to the nearest court to register their testimony." The court also invited those able to join sighting committees, adding, "We hope that those who are able to sight the crescent moon will join the committees formed for this purpose, seeking reward and recompense for their cooperation in righteousness and piety, which benefits all Muslims."
This annual call highlights the importance of moon sighting in Islam, which determines the start of Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, and community. Saudi Arabia keeps this tradition firmly rooted in Islamic law by involving public testimony rather than relying solely on calculations. The practice also fosters unity and shared responsibility among Muslims.
Additionally, the Supreme Court issues similar calls for sighting the Shawwal crescent to mark Ramadan's end and the start of Eid al-Fitr. These announcements help synchronize national schedules, including work and religious events, ensuring smooth observance across the Kingdom.
In today's digital age, the court's call is widely shared via media and public platforms, blending ancient religious customs with modern communication. As the date nears, millions prepare to observe this sacred practice, honoring faith and community in the heart of Saudi Arabia.
