Indian-Origin Businessman Charged with Arson After Sports Bar Fire in Canada
January 30, 2026
Rajinderpal Basran, a 50-year-old Indian-origin businessman in Canada, has been arrested for arson with intent to defraud. The charge is linked to a fire that destroyed his sports bar, Halftime Huddle, in Leader near Saskatoon. The fire occurred on October 26, 2025, early in the morning around 2:40 a.m. Police responded quickly but the building was burned to ashes. RCMP found video footage showing a suspect breaking into the bar and leaving in a dark SUV. Basran told CBC he was not in town when the fire started. He said, "I will come out of this but the mental trauma and safety of my family, safety of my people who work around, that's the most important right now." The fire destroyed the business his family helped build for years. Basran owns three other businesses in Leader. He is due to appear in court on March 19.
