Maharashtra Government Assures Land Rights After Farmers’ Long March
January 31, 2026
The long march for land rights that began in Nashik ended successfully on Thursday, January 29, 2026. The Maharashtra government gave a written guarantee to implement the demands of the protestors. The march reached Mumbai on February 3 and led to talks with government ministers and officials.
A delegation from CPI(M) and All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) met with five Ministers and officials on January 27. Then, they met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at his official residence, Varsha. After discussing, the Chief Minister assured full implementation of the accepted demands.
The government promised that forest landholders can apply for re-examination of their land claims. These applications will be carefully checked. A committee led by the Sub-Divisional Officer will grant forest rights using reports from village committees and two proofs as per the Forest Rights Act.
Protestors demanded the Forest Rights Act be enforced, the use of water flowing into the sea for local communities and drought areas, and the start of PESA recruitment. This recruitment aims to provide jobs in education, agriculture, and more.
The protest marks a significant step in the fight for farmers' and forest dwellers' rights in Maharashtra.
