Patna Bird Sanctuary and Chhari-Dhand in Gujarat Become Ramsar Sites, India Now Has 98

The wetlands in Kutch, Gujarat, and Etah, Uttar Pradesh have been declared Ramsar sites, a global recognition for unique ecosystems under protection. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the people and conservationists involved, saying, "Delighted that the Patna Bird Sanctuary in Etah (Uttar Pradesh) and Chhari-Dhand in Kutch (Gujarat) are Ramsar sites. Congratulations to the local population there as well as all those passionate about wetland conservation." This brings India's total number of Ramsar sites to 98. Highlighting the government's dedication, he said, "May these wetlands continue to thrive as safe habitats for countless migratory and native species." Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav also praised Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat and the wetland community for the achievement. He noted hundreds of migratory and resident birds live there, alongside chinkara, wolves, caracal, desert cats, desert foxes, and endangered birds. The Minister added, "Under the visionary leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi ji, the Indian Ramsar network has seen an expansion of over 276 per cent - climbing from 26 in 2014 to 98 now." This recognition strengthens India's commitment to preserving vital ecosystems and biodiversity.
