Ukraine Faces Bitter -20C Cold Amid Fragile Energy Truce After Russian Power Grid Attacks
January 31, 2026
Ukrainians are preparing for a brutal cold wave with temperatures plunging below -20C just as their heating systems remain broken due to Russian airstrikes on the power grid. Yulia Hailunas in Dnipro wears thick coats indoors and warms her feet with hot water, but fears the coming cold will cause heating pipes to burst. "It will be a catastrophe," she says.
On Thursday, Donald Trump announced that Vladimir Putin agreed to pause attacks on major Ukrainian cities during the cold wave, calling it "very nice." However, the Kremlin later said the pause lasts only until Sunday, when the cold will peak. Since heavy strikes on 24 January, there have been no new major attacks, but Ukrainians doubt the truce will last.
"I think Putin wants to turn people against their government," Yulia said. "He wants to break us, but it won't work."
The attacks have damaged Ukraine's energy grid for four winters, making repairs harder. Engineers work nonstop to restore power and fix heating pipes under apartment blocks in cities like Kyiv and Dnipro.
Despite the truce on energy, deadly attacks continue elsewhere. On Friday, shelling killed one person and injured several in Kherson. Fighting along the eastern front remains intense, pushing civilians like Kateryna and her family to flee their homes.
Ukraine has mirrored Russia by halting strikes on Russian oil facilities to support peace talks pushed by Trump, who hopes to end the war quickly. However, Russian officials lower expectations for a deal as major disagreements remain.
As Ukraine faces darkness and freezing cold, many wonder if Moscow’s truce is sincere or just a ploy. The upcoming days and negotiations in the UAE will test if peace is truly possible.
