A part of Rajiv Gandhi Salai near the Indira Nagar U Turn flyover in Chennai was closed since Saturday morning due to a sunken sewage line underneath. The Highways Department spotted a dip in the road on Friday night near the flyover's approach ramp from the Tidel Park side. They quickly placed barricades for motorists' safety. Early Saturday, digging revealed a leak in a 2.2-meter sewer pipe caused by the sinking. Chennai Metrowater is now fixing the pipe. Due to repairs, one lane was blocked on the 50-feet stretch, causing slow traffic all day. Officials expect repairs to finish by Sunday. A former Highways engineer noted this was the fourth road sinking on Rajiv Gandhi Salai caused by this sewer line. He said, “Efforts must be made to replace the line, and the capacity of the pumping station should be enhanced to prevent such incidents in future. The lines from Madhya Kailas temple to IIT Madras and that running near the Madhya Kailash flyover too have to be changed to prevent leaks.”
